Resist the enemy

God told Israel to deal completely with the nations in the land, making no treaties with them (Deuteronomy 7:1–2). Our enemy is the devil, and negative thoughts and words are his tools. He prowls “as a roaring lion” looking for someone who is alone, sick or worn down (1 Peter 5:8). Stay close to other believers, keep your eyes on Christ, and “resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

Love God with all your heart

What does God ask of us? To fear Him, walk in His ways, love Him and serve Him with all our heart and soul (Deuteronomy 10:12–13). Jesus called loving God with all your heart, soul and mind the first and greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37–38). Not only when we need something, and not only on Sunday.

Do what’s right and be generous

Choose to do right even when you don’t feel like it, including praying for people who hurt you (Deuteronomy 12:28). Open your hand to the poor and needy (Deuteronomy 15:11); “he that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD” (Proverbs 19:17, KJV). Give as you are able, cheerfully, in proportion to how God has blessed you (Deuteronomy 16:16–17). Often, finding a way to help someone is as simple as listening.

Keep pressing on, with a strong heart

None of us is perfect yet, but like Paul we keep pressing toward it (Philippians 3:12). When the battle looks bigger than you, remember what the priest told Israel before they went out: don’t be fainthearted, because “the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you” (Deuteronomy 20:1–4, KJV). Where two or three agree in prayer, Jesus is there with them (Matthew 18:19–20).

Trust God’s faithfulness

Life isn’t always fair, but God is. “He is the Rock, his work is perfect… a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4, KJV). When trouble comes, thank Him for what He has already done, and hand the battle to Him.
